Cassie Black: A Mentor’s Growth
Building trust, respect, and authentic connections through mentorship
Words by | Marley Morgan

Cassie’s journey into mentoring began in 2022 after a long career in modelling. Her first workshop in Darwin, supported by the North Foundation, was a turning point. The positive feedback from the young participants inspired her to continue, leading her to want to share her experience and create opportunities for young people in remote communities to explore modelling and build confidence.

One of Cassie’s most cherished memories from her time in Gapuwiyak was a sunset photoshoot by the lake. What made it so special was the presence of the models’ families, who came down the river to support them. That family support empowered the models, giving them the confidence and courage to proudly showcase the designs. Cassie noted that they were all natural talents.

Cassie’s experience in Gapuwiyak was transformative, helping her grow professionally in numerous ways. Being in a new community pushed her to step up as a leader and trust her instincts. She had to adapt quickly, which reinforced the importance of creating a safe and comfortable space where young people can be themselves. The experience also gave her valuable insights into areas she can continue to develop in her role as a mentor.
Cassie’s key advice for anyone starting out in mentoring, especially in remote communities, is to prioritise building trust, respect, and authentic connections. She emphasizes that the ultimate goal should be to create real, positive change and uplift communities. A mentor’s focus should never be on personal gain or ego; a culturally safe and respectful space can only be created when the community’s well-being is the top priority.
