For several years, he graced our runways as a model, captivating audiences with his presence and professionalism. Join us as we chat with Jake about his experiences, from the excitement of the runway to mentorship, and explore what makes Country to Couture such a special program.

Jake Powers, a 20-year-old hailing from Broome, Western Australia, is making waves in the modelling industry. His journey began unexpectedly in 2023 when, after finding himself jobless in Perth, his Aunty Aggie Pigram invited him to Darwin. Initially, the plan was to help run a stall and model activewear for Ardi’ol at the Country to Couture runway. Little did Jake know, this opportunity would ignite a passion and launch his modelling career.

Staying Grounded in Culture

Since then, Jake’s portfolio has grown. He’s participated in photoshoots with local brands and graced the runways of several prestigious events, including the 2024 Country to Couture, the KAFTA runway in Broome, and the Ord Valley Muster runway.

Despite the demands of the modelling world, Jake remains deeply connected to his Yawuru, Bardi, and Kija heritage. as a proud Bardi Aamba (cultural man), my connections run deep – my Country, culture and lore are the foundation of who I am, he explains. “I take whatever my elders say seriously. Being connected to culture is a privilege, especially for Indigenous men today.”

For Jake, this connection is nurtured through regular hunting and fishing trips on Country with family and friends. “That’s the best part about being grounded and connected to culture – having that spontaneous luxury of being on Country 24/7.”

Country to Couture: A Platform for Blak Excellence

Country to Couture holds a special significance for Jake. “It means having all Blak excellence and talent shown and promoted in an industry that feels like a breakthrough moment for all Indigenous creatives,” he says. “It means we’re just as deadly, if not more, than what the average white industry/population puts out there.” He sees it as an empowering experience, a privilege to share his culture with the world.

Advice for Aspiring Indigenous Models

Jake’s advice for other Indigenous individuals dreaming of a modelling career is simple: “DO IT!” He emphasises the importance of building a portfolio and actively promoting oneself on social media. “I knew scratch all about becoming a model,” he admits, “but if I could do it all over again, I’d get all my basic portfolio shots and post them on a fresh Instagram page. Then continue to post all sorts of things and gather information on post templates from other models’ Instagram pages.” He encourages aspiring models to overcome any initial hesitation and embrace self-promotion. “The key to becoming a model is post, post, post,” he stresses. “I felt shame at first, but over time, I don’t just post my photoshoots anymore because I don’t care what people think, and I love posing anyway. That’s why I want to model, and people love it!”

Jake’s journey is a testament to the power of cultural connection, self-belief, and seizing opportunities. He represents a new generation of Indigenous voices in the fashion industry, and his story is sure to inspire others to follow their dreams.
